Robi sets up safe drinking water plant at Sylhet Rail Station

Robi Axiata Limited has set up a safe drinking water plant titled “Nirapod Pani, Sushtho Jibon” for railway passengers at the Sylhet railway station. This CSR initiative is being implemented in collaboration with Bangladesh Railway. Water Aid Bangladesh is providing technical support in the Project.

The project was inaugurated this morning at the Sylhet Rail Station by Honorable Railway Minister, xxxxx and Mayor of Sylhet, XXXXX along wit, XXXX. Among others Robi Vice President, CSR - Mohiuddin Babar, officials of Bangladesh Railway were also present.

The water tank can supply 5000 liter safe drinking water per hour to meet thirst of more than six thousands passengers traveling at the Sylhet railway station. Among the x taps installed with the reservoir, x were kept for male, x for female, x is dedicated for the disabled people and x were kept for ozu.

A membrane filtration system has been installed, which will purify the water by using ultraviolet light. After random sample selection from the water tank, Water Aid will send it to the laboratory for test to ensure pure water on regular basis. A caretaker will be appointed to look after the water supplying facility at the station.

Robi and Water Aid have jointly conducted a survey among the railway travelers at Sylhet station to look at the necessity of a safe drinking water facility in this area. Recently similar pure drinking water facility was inaugurated in Khulna rail station.

Robi posts 4Q result: regulatory challenges impacting growth

Mobile phone operator Robi Axiata Limited, reported 1% revenue growth in fourth quarter (Q4) of 2012, down from the natural trend due to regulatory directives on 10 second pulse, post-activation coupled with intense competitions.

Presenting the Q4 report, at a press briefing in a city hotel on Tuesday, 26 February, Robi chief financial officer (CFO) Mahtab Uddin Ahmed said, “During the fourth quarter of 2012 the company has seen slowdown in subscriber acquisition and revenue earning due to 10 second pulse and post activation implementation.”

According to figures released by the company subscriber growth has been impacted by post activation regime. Robi could only add 240,000 additional subscribers in Q4 of 2012, which is only 1.1% higher than last quarter, Q3 of 2012. Average quarterly growth rate of the first three quarters of the year 2012 was 8.8%.

Due to slower acquisition of customer, the company returned to profit this quarter after posting a BDT660 million loss in the last quarter, Q3 of 2012. This quarter Robi manages an improved Profit After Tax (PAT) of BDT 1,249 million primarily due to drop in customer acquisition costs amid post activation challenges.

The CFO added, “Higher tax regime has greatly impacted profitability of the mobile operator in fiscal year 2012. Robi management fears that if such high tax regime continues, even incremental growth may not be sustainable in the future; which could be detrimental to government revenue collection, the dream of digital Bangladesh, and above all the telecom industry.

It may also be mentioned that BDT 17,577 million has been brought in to the country as FDI from shareholders during the year of 2012, while no dividend has been proposed for the same business year. Notably Robi has not paid out any dividend to its stakeholders since 2006, while investing BDT 26,774 million during the same period.

Mahtab Uddin Ahmed, Chief Financial Officer, Pradeep Shrivastava, Chief Market Officer and acting Chief Executive Officer, Matiul Islam Nowshad, Chief Human Resources Officer of Robi were present, along with other top officials of the company, at the press briefing.

Robi has also enhanced network/BTS distribution, capacity & coverage. Geographical coverage was increased to 89% with population coverage increasing to 98.7%. With the addition of 89 new BTSs in Q4, the total number of BTS stands at 8,684 at the end of 2012.

In the last quarter, the company has launched new prepaid package Joy 21, dynamic tariff, free handsets, different bundle offers and up to 300 % bonus as New Year gift.

Robi has also launched many innovative value added services in the fourth quarter; like Robi Blast, m- Farmer, voice tube, free goongoon offer, Hridoy mix 3 audio albums on Robi radio etc.

As a part of its corporate social responsibility, Robi has been providing pure drinking water in major railway stations. The company also provided free club foot treatment to 188 children in Q4 of 2012.

2012 was an eventful year for Robi, in terms of both subscriber and revenue growth. This was driven by several initiatives which included organizational transformation, the revamp of Robi’s brand proposition, offering innovative products as well as effective cost management.

Robi’r Alo illuminates thousands of villagers in Kaluar Char, Kurigram

Mobile phone operator Robi Axiata Limited under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program has extended the “Robir Alo” project to include another 440 houses in Kaluarchar, Chor Joy Kumer & Kismat Cinay villages. The extended “Robir Alo” project was inaugurated today.

Upazila Chairman Alhaz Abu Noor Muhammed Aktaruzzaman, Chairman, Union Parishad, Chenai Sadequl Haque. Robi Executive Vice President Robi Mahmudur Rahman and Vice President Mohiuddin Babar were present along with Robi regional officials of Rangpur at the event.

Robi has been supplying solar-electricity to another 150 families of Kaluar Char village of Rajarhat upazila of Kurigram district free of cost since the beginning of 2012. After the extension of this project 590 families are being benefited.

The power supplied by this initiative will save BDT. 150 to 200 as kerosene cost per family where the average income is only 2000 to 2500 taka (saving approx. 6% saving of their total income).

This will also allow them to have the privilege of using power at night time and the opportunity to work at night to add value in their life. Approximately 3500 people will be directly benefited under the project.

About the ‘Robir Alo’ program, the executive vice president of Robi Mahmudur Rahman said, “Robi always considers about the CSR while providing modern telecommunication service in the country. As a result, Robi stands beside the general people of the country with many kinds of development programs”.

Robi promotes Young talent of the nation

Mobile phone operator Robi Axiata Limited has taken an initiative called “Young Talent Program (YTP)” to take young talent development to greater heights by organizing a nationwide case competition as part of the assessment process. This year’s event is a continuation of the program in the 2nd phase.

The event was launched today at a city hotel. Robi Chief Human Resources Officer Matiul Islam Nowshad was present at the event along with Vice presidents Rizwan Hamid Quraishi, Tauhidul Alam, Faisal Khan, Farhad Mahbub and Sayed Talat Kamal along with other officials of the company.

With the vision of nurturing the young minds through identifying and developing talents among them, Robi Axiata Limited, through its Young Talent Program (YTP), is providing a platform for the graduating students to demonstrate their highest potential for becoming a leader of the future corporate community of Bangladesh.

Speaking on the occasion Mr. Nowshad said, “Almost 40 per cent of the population in Bangladesh is comprised of the youth and they have huge potential to bring about positive changes in the society. The development of young talents of the country will ensure the development of the country’s business sector as a whole.”

“Young Talent program will help them to grow as good citizens and good leaders so that they can assume responsible roles of corporate leaders irrespective of industry, in the future,” he added.

The program is a first of its kind in Bangladesh. Initially graduating students from 19 most renowned universities of Bangladesh will be able to take part in the case competition. The competition will include graduating students irrespective of the faculty they are enrolled to.

To ensure fairness and objectivity, Robi has collaborated with external knowledge partner in this context.

The program will be executed in three phases. The first phase, Intra-university case study competition, the second phase will comprise of inter-university competition. Winners from the second phase will participate in the grand finale.

YTP was launched in 2012, providing graduating students the opportunity to prove their potential as future leaders through stringent assessment and join Robi for a rigorous grooming period of 1 year, after which they would be absorbed into managerial positions. The program has already on boarded a group of young graduates through the framework.

Ravi Shankar, the musician and composer died last 11 December in USA, on the month of victory of Bangladesh.

Robi organizes health camps in 260 unions

Robi Axiata Limited, a leading mobile phone operator, has recently launched a series of one-day health camps at different corners of the country to serve the general masses.

Robi has planned to cover 26,000 people in eight districts (Bogra, Rajshahi, Rangpur, Sylhet, Comilla, Barisal, Mymensingh and Khulna) across 260 unions through this unique campaign.

In the health camps, health volunteers provided health advice to the local community people. Locally assigned staff of Robi made the announcement in his/her areas to inform people about the date, time and venue of the health camps.

Health volunteers who are senior medical students provided basic medical advice on winter-related diseases and provide the required medicines.

The main objective of this campaign is to inspire the youth and professionals to give back to their communities.

Robi distributes sweaters among the underprivileged in Kurigram region

Mobile phone operator Robi Axiata Limited has recently distributed sweaters among the underprivileged and poverty-stricken villagers of Kaluarchar, Char Joy Kumar and Kismat Chanai of Kurigram.

Total 3000 woolen sweaters were given to the villagers at beginning of the winter season. These villages have seen some of the coldest winters in recent years and face unbearable hardship while working in the Char areas.

Mobile Phone Operator Robi Axiata Limited has recently signed a bilateral Transmission Network Sharing agreement with NTTN company Fiber@Home Limited. Managing Director & CEO of Robi, Michael Kuehner and Managing Director of Fiber@Home Moynul Haque Siddiqui signed the agreement at the Robi Corporate Office.

Robi expects to have more sharing and cooperation in coming days. Transmission Network Sharing will help both Robi and Fiber@Home to utilize the Transmission Network they own more efficiently. This will help them to cut cost & be competitive. This will also help to realize the Digital Bangladesh dream in line with the government vision.

Transmission Network Sharing can be a useful tool for stimulating Mobile networks in areas that may otherwise be uneconomical to serve. This will gratly benefit the consumers by increasing the availability of communication services, increasing consumer choice and reducing the cost of services.

Mobile phone operator Robi Axiata Limited, reported BDT 9,627 million revenue earning in second quarter (Q2) of 2012. This is an increase of 26.2 percent from the same period of 2011 and 7.7 percent increase from the previous quarter (Q1 2012).

The company has shown strong growth trends in almost all financial metrics amidst strong growth in revenue and optimizes in operational efficiencies.

The company has also added 1.5 million subscribers in Q2 of 2012, 26 percent higher than the same period of 2011. These were informed at a press briefing at a city hotel on Tuesday.

Michael Kuehner, Managing Director & CEO, Mahtab Uddin Ahmed, Chief Financial Officer and Pradeep Shrivastava, Chief Market Officer were present along with other top officials of the company at the press briefing.

Presenting the Q2 report, Robi chief financial officer (CFO) Mahtab Uddin Ahmed said,

“We have achieved BDT 3,244 mn in Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) in Q2 of 2012 driven by higher revenue and operational efficiency. Steadily increasing EBITDA margin reached 33.7% in Q2 of 2012, highest in last 6 quarters. With growth in EBITDA, stability in forex environment brought positive growth in our Profit After Tax (PAT).”

Robi has also enhanced network/BTS distribution, capacity & coverage. Geographical coverage was increased to 89%, population coverage increased to 98.7%. With adding 37 new BTSs in Q2, the total number of BTS stood at 8,392 until Q2, 2012.

Beside these, Robi contributed BDT 3,932 million to government exchequer in Q2 of 2012.

The company has also shown relentless focus on customer centricity with its innovative products & services to unleash the power of youth like Ebar Hobei, Reviving Jamdani Motifs, Axiata Roam in 58 countries, affordable handset bundles, postpaid revamp, Voucher based recharge, Data bundle offers etc.

As a part of its corporate social responsibility, Robi has been providing treatment & creating awareness of Clubfeet deformity among children. It has already provided free treatment to 224 feet of 154 disabled children.

Free Life Insurance Service for Robi Prepaid Subscribers

Mobile operator Robi Axiata Limited has launched an innovative service to offer free life insurance coverage for the first time in the country for all its prepaid subscribers. Robi Managing Director & CEO Michael Kuehner, Md. Abul Basher Akhond, Managing Director & CEO of Pragati Life Insurance, and Chief Executive Office of Milvik (BIMA), Gustaf Agartsson launched the insurance service today at a city hotel.

At the ceremony, Robi CEO Michael Kuehner said, “This is an innovative service which the customers would like. Robi gives its customers highest priority and wants to stand beside them in every situation. In that case such insurance facility will add a whole new dimension.

Robi Chief Market Officer Pradeep Shrivastava said, “Under this life insurance cover each registered Robi Prepaid subscriber aged between 18 -60 years will earn insurance coverage in every calendar month by using a minimum of BDT 250TK worth of talk-time. “

Pradeep also said, “With more usage, more insurance coverage will be earned. The cover level will be renewed every month and will be cumulative in nature. The maximum insurance coverage that can be accumulated is BDT 50,000.”

There are several options for a subscriber to register for the service. A subscriber can register by dialing *1216*1# from their handset with Robi prepaid SIM. Also they can register by visiting a Robi Walk in Center (WIC)/RSP – A Bima or a Robi agent will help with the registration.

Inaugurating the event Chief Human Resources Officer of Robi Axiata Limited Matiul Islam Nowshad said, ‘The effort is meant to encourage employees to meet their responsibilities as good citizens and to be active participants in activities, especially those of humanitarian and social nature.”

He also commended the employees’ positive response to the campaign, citing the high turnout at the donation center in a bid to meet the increasing demand on donated blood, by public and private hospitals and thus help save many lives.

An eligible person can donate blood 3 times a year and can save up to 9 lives a year. Nobody can store his/her blood in the body for more than 120 days; all the blood cells die as per its life span. In Bangladesh, there is need of more than 400,000 bags of blood a year. If 1% of total population donates blood voluntarily, then nobody would die for want of blood.

The theme of the contest was “Rong Tulite Amar Prithibi” and the children were expected to draw/paint picture portraying the world as they would want it to be. The competition was open to children aged between 3 to 14 years. About 80 children gathered at the art competition. The children drew pictures on the theme for 2012 encompasses various aspects of human living, ranging from transport to energy to food to sustainable livelihood.

The (LMC) is a university-level competition designed to engage and retain students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Top 60 teams from all around the world are participating at LMC, including Harvard University, Virginia Tech, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Embry Riddle Aeronautical University, and McGill University etc. BRAC University is the first Bangladeshi team to participate at such an event. Robi sponsored the team to carry on the research programme to invent the lunar excavation device.

NASA will directly benefit from the competition by encouraging the development of innovative lunar excavation concepts from universities that may result in clever ideas and solutions, which could be applied, to an actual lunar excavation device or payload.

It all started in September 2011, when NASA approved BRAC University’s entry for the second time.

A team of from BRAC University is competing at the on-site finals at Kennedy Space Center, including Dr. Md. Khalilur Rhaman(Faculty Advisor), Dr. Md. Robi Executive Vice President Mahmudur Rahman and Chairman of Lion Mukhlesur Rahman Foundation Ln. Md Nader Khan signed the agreement on behalf of their respective organizations. As per the agreement Robi & Zero Clubfoot will provide free clubfoot treatment in Chittagong region.

The treatment will be available in Lion Mukhlesur Rahman Plastic Surgery Hospital, Ramu Upazilla Health Complex, Khagrachhari Sadar Hospital, Feni Sadar Hospital, Comilla Medical College Hospital, Noakhali Sadar Hospital, Brahmanbaria Sadar Hospital, Chandpur Sadar Hospital and Lakshmipur Sadar Hospital.

Every year in Bangladesh an estimated 5000 children are born with a clubfoot deformity. Most of them do not receive any treatment required for this deformation at all. It is believed that there is little hope of eliminating club foot deformity while a large group of children remain untreated. Robi took this initiative for the children who could not live a normal life because of clubfoot.

BGB signs infrashare agreement with Robi

Set up at the Centre for Neurodevelopment and Autism in Children of BSMMU, it would help in developing skills of nurses as well as test their skills. Apart from this, nurses would also get the opportunity to practice the skills needed to complete a thorough history and physical examination of the patients.

Their effort to enrich the Graduate Nursing Department with new resources will be helpful in strengthening Nursing education in the country. Robi sets up safe drinking water plant at Chittagong Rail Station

Robi Axiata Limited has set up a safe drinking water plant titled “Nirapod Pani, Sushtho Jibon” for railway passengers at the Chittagong railway station. This CSR initiative is being implemented in collaboration with Bangladesh Railway. Water Aid Bangladesh is providing technical support in the Project.

The project was inaugurated today at the Chittagong Rail Station by Honorable Minister, Ministry of Primary and Mass Education Dr. Md. Afsarul Ameen, MP. Among others Robi Chief Human Resources Officer Matiul Islam Nowshad, Vice President Segufta Y. Samad, Program Director, Water Aid, Bangladesh Hasin Jahan & Divisional Railway Manager, Chittagong A.K.M. Mahbub Ul Alam were also present.

The water tank with the capacity of 5000 liter will supply 4000 liter safe drinking water per hour to meet thirst of more than 15 thousands passengers traveling at the Chittagong railway station. Among the 12 taps installed with the reservoir, five were kept for male, four for female, one is dedicated for the disabled people and 2 were kept for ozu.

A membrane filtration system has been installed, which will purify the water by using ultraviolet light. After random sample selection from the water tank, Water Aid will send it to the laboratory for test to ensure pure water on regular basis. A caretaker will be appointed to look after the water supplying facility at the station. Robi and Water Aid in December of last year have jointly conducted a survey among the railway travelers at Chittagong station to look at the necessity of a safe drinking water facility in this area.

Bangladesh Railway has expressed its keen interest to set up several safe drinking water facilities in other divisional railway stations with the support from Robi and Water Aid Bangladesh.

Robi sees strong revenue growth, driven by aggressive subscriber growth

Robi Axiata Limited today announced its unaudited results for the third quarter (Q3) of 2011. Building on its steady performance the company posted highest quarterly revenue earning of BDT 7,821 million in third quarter (Q3) of 2011.

This is an increase of 13 percent from the same period of 2010 and 3 percent increase from the previous quarter. However, on normalized basis total revenue growth was 23% during the third quarter (Q3) of 2011 as compared to the same quarter of previous year. The company has also added .785 million subscribers in Q3 of 2011, an increase of 5.4 percent from last quarter. These were informed at a press briefing at the head quarters of Robi Axiata Limited in the city on Monday, 5 December 2011.

Michael Kuehner, Managing Director & CEO, Mahtabuddin Ahmed, Chief Financial Officer were present along with other top officials of the company at the press briefing.

Presenting the Q3 report, Robi chief financial officer (CFO) Mahtabuddin Ahmed said, “EBITDA margin for the Q3 of 2011 was up by 18 percent from the last quarter (Q2 of 2011) driven by aggressive subscriber growth, SIM tax reduction and better cost management. Our growth trajectory continues with highest quarterly revenue of BDT 7,821 million.

Michael Kuehner, Managing Director & CEO mentioned, “I’m pleased that our quarterly performance has become very consistent in terms of revenue growth and profitability despite operating in a very tough environment for the industry. We will keep our focus on offering to our customer the best value for money. This will further strengthen our position in a growing market.

This quarter Robi offered good numbers of customer centric products. The company offered first ever customized voice product “Robi Nobanno” for subscribers in rural areas. It has also brought out “Udoy” sub-brand, next generation postpaid voice services. The company has also simplified tariff plan with Robi Shorol package. It has also offered Robi Handset with attractive startup package.

The company has also introduced the most advanced m-wallet with bKash. Within few months the company has seen 20,000 registered customers.

The company has increased population coverage from 97.5% to 97.8%. With adding 340 new BTS in Q3, the total number of BTS stood at 7,861 until Q3, 2011.

Beside all these, Robi contributed BDT 2,873 million to government exchequer which is an increase of 20% over the same period in last year.

As a part of its corporate social responsibility, Robi has launched “English in schools” program to facilitate the teaching and learning of English language in secondary level schools in the country.

The company has also launched “Internet Corner", aimed to provide free internet services for the users of Public Libraries in the country.

The company is also treating clubfoot children under its project “Protibondhita korbo joi, Ai hok Prottoi’. 50 clubfeet patients were treated in Q3, 2011 along with follow-up treatment of earlier patients. In total 186 procedures were done /treated till Q3, 2011

Robi supports clubfoot treatment- cured children express their happiness

Sheema cannot walk properly. Cannot go around, play or mix happily with all other children. Sheema is growing up with this grief and the dreams of her family are going to shattered. Even one day Sheema had to stop going to school. Now that Sheema can walk again normally, go around with everyone and can go to school. She and her family are now very excited. They have started dreaming once again.

Many children like Sheema are now free from this so called curse that can be cured if treated properly. The disability known as ‘Club foot’ is a birth abnormality. There are many children whose feet are in opposite way or their ankle is rotated internally.

Every year in Bangladesh an estimated 5000 children are born with a clubfoot deformity. Most of them do not receive any treatment required for this deformation at all. It is believed that there is little hope of eliminating club foot deformity while a large group of children remain untreated.

Telecom Company Robi Axiata Limited arranged a 2 days long pleasure tour for the clubfoot children after their successful treatment, stated at a program today with the journalists.

Director of Impact Foundation Dr. Hasib Mahmud on behalf of Impact Foundation Bangladesh, supporting agency to run this treatment program and the children with their family were also present.

Two years old Nitai and five years old Sahadat also came to Dhaka. Dilip Chandra Robi Dash, Father of Nitai and mother Putul Rani are very happy for their cured child. Father of Shahadat, Titu Kazi and mother Shakila Begum are also very happy that their child is going to school now.

4 years old Likhon and his father Lakkhan Pramanik and mother Ashtami Rani also came to Dhaka. Once disregarded Likhon is now favorite of all. 12 years old Sheema and her parents were also present. After treatment Sheema got back her power to stand normally.

They were brought to Dhaka for a two day visit by Robi. These children went for shopping in the Basundhara Shopping Mall, visited the Gulshan Wonderland. They also came to Robi corporate office, and introduced to employees of different levels.

A. K. M. Abdul Awal Mazumder Secretary, Ministry of Primary and Mass Education inaugurated the project today (15 November) at Rayer Bazar Govt. Primary School.

Vice President of Robi Axiata Mohiuddin Babar and David Paul Khandaker on behalf of Dhaka Zilla Parishad were present as Special guest.

At first rhyme books about environmental awareness were distributed among the students of five primary schools of the capital city. Banners containing quotes about awareness were hanged in the classrooms; flower and tree pots are also placed in classes and also dustbins in all classes. In each school one mirror has been placed so that students can get more conscious cleanliness and their look.

The schools covered under this project are Jigatola Model Primary School,Rajmunshi Primary School, Ayub Ali Primary School, Rayer Bazar Primary School & Moneswar primary school.

While addressing the students and teachers, A. K. M. Abdul Awal Mazumder, Secretary said, “It is very important to develop environmental awareness among children. If children became aware about environment from the primary stage, we will be able to keep all the places clean from city to village.”

Mohiuddin Babar of Robi said, “In the future it is the children who will build a beautiful, prosperous and eco friendly country. Robi sets up safe drinking water plant at Kamalapur Rail Station

Robi Axiata Limited has set up a safe drinking water plant titled “Nirapod Pani, Sushtho Jibon" for railway passengers at the Kamalapur railway station. This CSR initiative is being implemented in collaboration with Bangladesh Railway. Water Aid Bangladesh is providing technical support in the Project.

The project was inaugurated today at the Kamlapur Rail Station by Director General, Bangladesh Railway Md. Abu Taher and Chief Financial Officer of Robi Mahtabuddin Ahmed. Among others from Robi Executive Vice President, CRL Mahmudur Rahman, Vice President Segufta Y. Samad and Addl. Director General/Operation, Bangladesh Railway Mohammad Shahjahan were also present.

The water tank with the capacity of 5000 liter will supply 4000 liter safe drinking water per hour to meet thrust of more than 24 thousands passengers at the station. Among the 10 taps installed with the reservoir, five was kept for male, four for female and the rest one is dedicated for the disabled people.

A membrane filtration system has been installed, which will purify the water by using ultraviolet light. After random sample selection from the water tank, Water Aid will send it to the laboratory for test to ensure pure water on regular basis. A caretaker will be appointed to look after the water supplying facility at the station.

Robi and Water Aid in May this year have jointly conducted a survey among the railway travellers at Kamlapur station to look at the necessity of a safe drinking water facility in this area. The survey result shows that about 34 trains run through this stations which carry more than 24 thousands passengers per day. There were only four water taps, which was insufficient, to cater the need of pure drinking water to the passengers.

Bangladesh Railway has expressed its keen interest to set up several safe drinking water facilities in other divisional railway stations with the support from Robi and Water Aid Bangladesh. .

English learning fair kicks off

A Robi-Daily Star initiated English Language Fair kicked off in the city today aiming at spreading English language learning skills among the secondary school students across the country. The fair titled ‘Shafollo Ashbei’ started at 11:00 am from the St. Joseph Higher Secondary School in Mohammadpur, Dhaka and will be gradually held in other schools.

Prof. Md. Noman-ur-Rashid, Director General of the Secondary and Higher Education Professor Md Noman-ur-Rashid inaugurated the programme at St. Joseph school. The unique event was jointly organized by the Robi and the Daily Star, and coordinated by the ministry of Education.

The programme is designed to increase the scope as well as scale of English language learning by arranging English Learning Fair for 1000 schools across the country to improve secondary school students’ proficiency in English. At the daylong fair, students of St. Joseph school participated in many interesting activities for English learning. A movie was screened at the fair. They also entertained the audience by reciting poem, telling jokes and singing songs.

Mobile phone operator Robi Axiata Limited and the Daily Star jointly launched the “English in schools” program to facilitate the teaching and learning of English language in secondary level schools in the country. The three-year long program covers about seven lakh students in 1000 schools in 64 districts across the country. This initiative is designed to engage students, teachers and community for learning English language. There will be movie based competition, vocabulary tests, situation based quizzes in the fair.

The program was launched at a function at a local hotel today. Present on the occasion were the Director-Secondary Education, Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education Prof. Shafiqur Rahman. Robi holds steady growth

Robi Axiata Ltd, reported BDT 7,628 million revenue earning in second quarter (Q2) of 2011. This is an increase of 22 percent from the same period of 2010 and 8 percent increase from the previous quarter. The company has also added 1.2 million subscribers in Q2 of 2011, an increase of 9 percent. Michael Kuehner, Managing Director & CEO, Mahtabuddin Ahmed, Chief Financial Officer and Bidyut Kumar Basu, Chief Marketing Officer were present along with other top officials of the company at the press briefing.

Presenting the Q2 report, Robi chief financial officer (CFO) Mahtabuddin Ahmed said, “EBITDA margin for the of 2011 1H was up by 19 percent from the same period last year driven revenue growth and better cost management. Despite aggressive tariff cuts, company also managed to generate normalized PAT (Profit after TAX) growth of 24% in IH compared to the same period last year.

Robi also offers internet modem with 1 GB free browsing at BDT 1,999. Robi’s subscribers now can recharge their account without disclosing their numbers to retailers through newly introduced pin based recharge service. During the period, the company has also introduced “Robi Ortho” a financial service in partnership with bkash for remittance and payment of utilities services. In Q2, Robi has introduced single rate roaming service. With launching this service, its subscribers can talk at only 15 Tk per minutes while they roam to Malaysia, Srilanka, Indonesia and Cambodia.

“The Company increased network capacity & coverage. Geographical coverage was increased from 86% to 87.4%, population coverage from 96% to 97.5%. With adding 297 new BTS in Q2, the total number of BTS stood at 7,521,” he added.

As a part of its corporate social responsibility, Robi has been providing free medical service to the disabled people. It has already provided free treatment to 16 disabled persons in Q2 and till now a total of 136 persons have been given the free medical service. Robi has launched 17 more computer corners in Q2, taking the total number of computer corners to 72.

Beside all these, Robi contributed BDT 3,925M to government exchequer which is an increase of 37% over the last quarter. Robi senior officials further mentioned that along with concentration on business expansion, the company has also been making efforts to save the environment. As part of this process, we have been able to significantly reduce CO2 emission from network infrastructure base. In Q2, we have reduced 2695 ton CO2 emission .

Robi organizes blood donation campaign

The Chairman of Axiata Group Berhad (“Axiata”) Tan Sri Dato’ Azman HJ. Mokhtar has arrived in Dhaka today(30 June) on a three day visit. He is leading a team of board members of Axiata Group Berhad and directors from other operating companies of Axiata at a retreat in Bangladesh Details




Azman started his career in September 1983 at the then National Electricity Board (now known as Tenaga Nasional Berhad) until August 1994. Between 1994 and 1998, he was Director and Head of Research for Union Bank of Switzerland in Malaysia. Thereafter, he was Director and Head of Research at Salomon Smith Barney in Malaysia. From 2002 until May 2004, he was Managing Director of BinaFikir Sdn Bhd. From June 2004 to-date, Azman holds the position of Managing Director of Khazanah. He was appointed to the Axiata board on 3 March 2008.

Azman graduated with distinction in Masters of Philosophy in Development Studies from Darwin College, Cambridge University, United Kingdom as a British Chevening scholar. He is a Fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants, UK and is a Chartered Financial Analyst. He also holds a graduate diploma in Islamic Studies from the International Islamic University, Malaysia.

Robi records steady growth amidst a Challenging Operating Environment

Dhaka, 7th June 2011: Robi Axiata Limited today announced its unaudited results for the first quarter (Q1) of 2011 ending on 31st March at their corporate office in Gulshan. While addressing the reporters Michael Kuehner, Managing Director & CEO said’ “ The company saw stable performance in all financial metrics, in a seasonally slow quarter, amidst heightened competitive pressures, devaluation taka impacting foreign loan and license renewal issue in Bangladesh.”

While speaking about the highlights of Q1 of 2011, Chief Financial Officer of Robi Mahtabuddin Ahmed said, “Q1 recorded the highest ever quarterly revenue. Q1 of 2011 recorded 2% quarterly revenue growth of BDT 7,061 m. That is 19% up from Q1 of 2010 due to more reach in rural areas through stronger distribution channels.”

There has been impressive subscriber base growth of 7%. Nearly a million (0.9M) net subscriber addition in Q1 of 2011 by strengthening rural foot print, innovative value added services & incredible ISD rates in Axiata networks. Growth was also seen from accelerating data service by flexible purchase options, better speed, easy to purchase and multiple purchase option. The company has seen 46% YoY increase in data user that is 2.6m data user and 77% YoY increase in data revenue at the end of Q1 of 2011.

The company has also seen growth in EBITDA despite Aggressive Acquisition. Q1 2011 saw 1% growth from Q4 2010 and 45% growth from Q1 2010.

Robi made BDT 2,857 m contribution to National Exchequer in Q1 of 2011. For every 100 taka revenue of Robi, Govt. received Tk 40+ in Q1 of this year.

This year the company became more environmental friendly. Implemented Voltage & Temperature Monitoring System & Intelligent Ventilation System to reduce emission of CO2

The company also increased network capacity & coverage. Geographical coverage increased from 85% to 86%, Population coverage 96%. And 750 new BTS implemented in Q1. All old versions of BSC were modernized to improve data speed & network quality enhancement.

On year on year same quarter results (YoY), there was also a revenue improvement. Robi saw a revenue growth of 19% over Q1 2010, driven by sustained operational improvements by all key drivers. EBITDA improved by 45% over Q1 2010 which is indicative of operational excellence in cost control.

Actual PAT for the quarter was to BDT 54 M, which was somewhat lower than the same period of last year, which posted a profit of BDT 62 M (in Q1 2010). High acquisition costs and considerable devaluation of the local currency has caused such a noticeable dent in net profits.

For the first time in the country, mobile operator Robi Axiata Limited and Eastern Bank Limited (EBL) have begun a mobile remittance to facilitate Bangladeshi expatriates living abroad to transfer money through mobile phone.Details




Mobile remittance service, which has done wonders in other emerging market economies, will allow seamless and real-time fund transfer from one person's bank account to another.

This is an easy, most convenient and secured way to receive foreign remittance. Selected retailers/distributors, Robi Service Partners, will act as cash out points (accredited by the partner banks) from where the beneficiaries can withdraw their remittance in cash.

Managing Director & CEO of Robi, Michael Kuehner and Managing Director & CEO of Eastern Bank Limited, Ali Reza Iftekhar were present at the launching ceremony of the remittance service held at a restaurant in the city recently.
